ABE Students Participate in Healthy Living Awareness
Canada Health Day is celebrated on May 12 to honor the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a leader of reform in public health. In keeping with this celebration, the two CEN Adult Basic Education classes in Stephenville participated in several events throughout the day.
Ms. Paula Lucas, Produce Manager at Coleman’s Food Store, facilitated an information session on how to increase the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. Students were introduced to, and excited to sample, many new fruits including the Dragon Fruit. The participants enjoyed the information that was shared.
With the sun shining the 17 students enjoyed a brisk power walk around the block followed by a nutritious dinner of Veggie and Chicken Stir fry. The afternoon session involved another informative session on “You are what you eat,” facilitated by Community Education Network ABE Literacy Support, Corinne Tulk, who had also organized the day’s activities. The afternoon presentation centered on healthy living awareness. The participants were provided information on a variety of foods, portion sizes, and how important it is to eat a number of foods from the Canada Food Guide and to get lots of rest and exercise. It was a day enjoyed by all.
