Power Up! Phase Two a Success!
With the completion of Phase Two, Power Up! Participants are anxious and excited to begin the next phase of their program-Work Placement. During the four-week pre-employment orientation, emphasis was placed on the concept of life-long learning and building on life experiences. Power Up! participants engaged in employment and life skills training facilitated by various community resources and supporting agencies. Skill training included; effective communication, WHMIS, First Aid, and Labour Standards.
Concentration on resume building and effective cover letter writing combined with Labour Market Research enabled the group to confidently approach employers and secure employment for the next phase Through Goal Setting and Visioning along with Career Cruising the group felt that they were not so hesitant to begin their job searching. One participant had never worked before and “now (I) can’t wait. My resume is ten times better.”
Even though each of the eight participants have their own personal agenda for wanting to participate in the Power Up! Program, all of them agree that it is a way to “build skills and get back on the right track for a better life.”
Special thanks to many facilitators, organizations, agencies and for their support and guidance during the Pre-Employment Orientation: Dave Rex, and Pauline Duffy, the College of the North Atlantic, HRLE, CYN, CEN; Labour Standards Agency, the John Howard Society, BSG Women`s Center, Stephenville Relay for Life,.
Congratulations and good luck to all Power Up! participants!
