Communities In Schools – Port aux Basques Region
CIS Site Coordinators have been active in the schools with activities that enhance the school experience for students. Here are a few activities which highlight how creative staff have been at bringing community resources into the school.
Girls Circle: Twenty-five students from LeGallais Memorial and Grandy’s River Collegiate have participated in eight weekly after-school Body Image workshops led by the Guidance Counsellor. The girls reported having fun acquiring techniques on building healthy attitudes and creating positive social connections.
Square Dancing & Card Playing: CIS staff sometimes share their talents and interests with the students. Karen Farrell, a member of the Codroy Valley Square Dancing Group, is doing her part to ensure traditional Scottish Dance will not be lost. With support from the music teacher at Belanger Memorial and community volunteers, students have enjoyed learning this art form. Their first public performance will take place soon. As well, a lunch-time youth card club has been set up for students to learn and practice the skills of this well-known pastime.
Violence Prevention Month: All schools in the region were involved in month-long violence prevention activities, including Stand Up Day on February 29th. The signature Pink t-shirt campaign underscores the school and community effort to build more peaceful environments.
