Aunt Jean’s Place!
The official opening of Aunt Jean’s Place in Stephenville was held on Tuesday, June 19th. Reverend Kathryn Eddy opened the doors of her home to provide transitional and emergency housing to individuals struggling with homelessness. Renovations to the upstairs of her recently purchased home began in the spring, and now 3 bedrooms, a bathroom and a small kitchenette/living area is available for use. Â
Supported by the Community Education Network and Southwestern Newfoundland Housing Stability Initiative, Reverend Eddy has made her dream come true.  Inspired by her Aunt Jean who helped many people over the course of her lifetime, Kathryn wanted to carry on the tradition of providing a helping hand to those who found themselves struggling. Â
This is Aunt Jean’s Story:
“Aunt Jean” was born in Masstown, NS on June 19, 1936. She was adopted by Otis and Lulu Vance and moved with them to Ontario in the late 1940’s. She was wise, honest, hard-working, and loving. She had a great sense of humour and a distinctive laugh. She was a great listener and comforter to any who were experiencing hardship. If able, she would do what she could to help people help themselves.
One of her gifts that she took great delight in was the gift of hospitality. One always felt welcome at “Aunt Jean’s Place” no matter what age or social position.
Aunt Jean died on December 21, 2009. This home is named in memory of her and the many times she offered safety and shelter in the storms of life.
