MIND. SOUND. BODY
Welcome back to MIND. SOUND. BODY. How do you deal with anger? Each of us has dealt with anger and this is a normal feeling. However, it is when we ignore our anger signs (bottle it up), or lash out at others (blow up) that it becomes an issue. It’s important to deal with your anger for a number of reasons. When anger causes you discomfort, affects your health, and limits your ability to have healthy relationships, it’s time to look at short term and long term solutions.
Short Term Solutions
- Admit you’re angry
- Step back and assess, “Is this really as bad as I think it is?”
- Think about something pleasant
- Think about why you are angry
- Listen to yourself and others, avoid interruptions
Long Term Solutions
- Talk to someone who has dealt with anger successfully
- Don’t blame yourself (even if you are responsible), learn from the mistake
- Increase your physical activity (walk, swim, hike)
- Learn deep breathing exercises
- Learn to meditate
- Laugh at yourself
- Trust those around you
Feelings of anger are a normal reaction to certain situations. Often, it’s difficult to know what to do. Letting your anger pass or working hard to get rid of it can be a challenge. Changing your approach to anger by practicing the above short and long term solutions will certainly help you deal with reactions and remain mentally healthy.
