November Community Café
Held on the second Thursday of each month, Community Cafés have been on-going at the Stephenville Lion’s Club for over a year. As a program of the Housing Stability Initiative (HSI), the amount of community support received for the lunch has been an inspiration to organizers. Each month, the café is sponsored by a different organization or business, and has also received financial donations from private individuals. Sponsorshop for the November Café came from Stephenville Dominion. Along with monthly sponsors, regular monthly support is provided by the Stephenville Lion’s Club, Coleman’s Food Centre, community members and HSI partners.
Sponsorship comes in the form of financial or food donations, and may include hand-on support for set-up, welcoming guests, preparing food, serving, and/or clean-up. Along with sponsorship, volunteers give generously of their time to come regularly and assist with the lunch activities. The November café helpers included Stephenville Skills Link youth, students from the College of the North Atlantic, HSI members, Western Health staff, Community Education Network staff, and other individuals who enjoyed the wonderful lunch and socializing with patrons.
A second Community Café is sponsored by Zion Pentecostal Church in Stephenville, which happens on the fourth Thursday of each month. It’s dedicated volunteers and church staff are committed to providing a welcoming environment, lunch and conversation to the many individuals who drop by.
