First Piccadilly Central High Gotcha Pirate Winner!
Congratulations to Isiah Collier, winner of the first Gotcha Pirate draw at Piccadilly Central High! Gotcha Pirate is part of the PBIS (Positive Behaviour Information System) rolled out at the school as part of Respect Day activities, and is keeping with the school logo which is the Piccadilly Pirates. Through a partnership with PCH and CYN (the Youth Engagement Coordinator now sits as part of the PCH Safe and Caring Schools Committee), the development of the Gotcha Pirate theme has been embraced by both students and staff as a fun way to build school morale and create a positive and welcoming environment.
Each staff person at the school along with custodians and other supports were given a Gotcha Book which records Piccadilly Pirates demonstrating helpful and positive behaviours. Each classroom was provided with a Pirate Chest, and there is one at the main office as well to hold the name of the students. These names are then all put in for a weekly draw, and the winner gets to choose a reward of his/her choice. Also as part of Respect Day, the students were asked for suggestions for rewards they thought were appropriate and a list was developed for the winner to choose from.
Isiah decided that he wanted to sit in the moon chair (bean bag chair) for the day! As part of winning, his name was announced in the morning and he was provided with a “pass card” signed by school administration to keep on his person for the day showing that he was provided permission for his choice. His picture is also posted at the school for the week!
The Gotcha Pirate concept will have its weekly draw on Thursdays until the end of the school year when an acknowledgement activity is planned for reward winners. The kick-off of the initiative has helped foster a positive environment at the school, and plans are underway to continue with the initiative in the long term as a regular part of PBIS at Piccadilly Central High.
