Mmm! Mmm! Yummy Pancakes!
Winter 2014 has been a difficult one! An understatement to be sure. One would be hard-pressed to find one to argue this point. Most of us have experienced increased electric bills, higher heating costs, threatened with power outages and/or suffered aching backs from continuous shoveling. Regardless of our complaint, most of us could brave this winter from inside our four walls and roof, with some warmth to keep us safe and healthy. It is shameful to think that in 2014 there are many in Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada abound that do not have this luxury. Imagine shelter and heat considered a luxury.
As we embark into March we hold to the promise of spring, warm sunny days, and of new beginnings. This year, March also brought the smell of pancakes. On March 4 hundreds of folks fought against the bitter wind-chill of -30oC to support a great cause that affects us all while enjoying a deliciously prepared pancake breakfast with all the trimmings. Holding its annual Community Pancake Breakfast for Homelessness, the Housing Stability Initiative in partnership with the Community Education Network and Lion’s Club raised awareness around this debilitating issue.
For $5.00 patrons were treated with a hot breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausages, toast, baked beans and beverage all served with a smile. Some were even treated to breakfast by celebrity guests including Kippen’s Mayor Paul Noseworthy. Along with raising awareness, all proceeds will be distributed to local organizations who deal daily with homelessness and housing instability. In addition, food and monetary donations were accepted and presented to the local Emergency Food Bank.
Whether you purchased or prepared a breakfast, washed dishes or took one out, stayed for 10 minutes or the day take pride in your stand against homelessness. Thank you to all who supported this worthwhile event.
Keep up the fight!
