Community Café: Volunteering a Sense of Accomplishment
The Community Café offers something different for everyone. For some it is a means to an empty belly, others a meal with friends. Some come out to enjoy the social aspect while others use it as a chance to be entertained. Regardless the reason, the Housing Stability Committee is glad to have them there. Since 2011, over 4900 meals have been served at the Lions Club venue with hundreds of volunteers assisting with the preparation and delivery of the meal. For anyone who dropped by the Lions Club during July’s café, there were many new faces ready and willing to help.

Power Up! participants Rachel Young and Bob Collins serve up a delicious meal to the Community Cafe patrons
As part of their program, eight participants of the Power Up! program were on hand to do whatever was necessary to deem the day a success. Setting tables, doing dishes, serving up salads or assisting patrons with their meal preferences were just a few of the services provided that day. For some participants this was another chance to give back to their community, while for others this was their first time volunteering.
“This was the first time I have volunteered at a community function; it was a great experience, so much so that I want to do it again. It made me feel great to give back and feel like I had something to offer. Although it was a small part, I went home feeling good inside and gave me a sense of accomplishment. I loved it and hope to get to do it again.” –Jeremy Bjanes
Special thanks to the Stephenville Lions Club for sponsoring this month’s sizzling menu of BBQ hot dogs and hamburgers and scrumptious salads. To the many volunteers, first timers and seasoned, these events would not be achievable were it not for you. We hope to see you all next month as the Community Café partners with the Community Youth Network to celebrate International Youth Day.
See you all on August 13, 2015. 😛
