Stand Up! Day— a PINK Success
by Corinne Tulk
Feb 24, 2016 was recognized province-wide as Stand Up! day or Pink Shirt Day. A day where the province supports and pledges to not stand by but, to stand up for violence free communities. Businesses, organizations, government offices and schools took pride in their anti-bullying stance by proudly wearing their pink shirt.
Pink Shirt Day is an initiative started by a group of Nova Scotia high school boys in 2007 who defended another student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In a show of solidarity, a large group of students showed up to school wearing pink shirts.
Today, the phenomenon is recognized worldwide and here in Stephenville, NL it was a “pink” success. Schools, businesses and organizations should be recognized for their part. From staff sporting pink shirts, students decorating the schools, to window displays, and messages on town marquees the word was out, Stephenville, NL will not tolerate violence, we will STAND UP!
