Community Café: doing its part to ending the stigma regarding mental illness
March 6-12, 2016 is Stigma Awareness Week and the Consumer Health Awareness Network of Newfoundland and Labrador (CHANNAL) is diligently working at raising awareness regarding mental illness and the stigma attached.
On March 10th, Community Café volunteers were seen supporting Stigma Awareness Week by wearing t-shirts announcing “this is what someone who supports mental illness looks like.” Since 2011, the Southwestern Housing Stability Initiative’s primary objective is to provide housing awareness and resources to those who feel socially isolated, are living on a fixed income, or anyone who feels unconnected with their community.
The Community Café environment offers an inclusive safe haven for all community members, where labels are left at the door. Everyone is welcome to join the fun, music and form new friendships all while enjoying a hot, delicious meal.
In addition to sponsoring this month’s café, CHANNAL will also be hosting their 2nd Annual Variety Show on Friday, March 11 from 7-9 at the Stephenville Lions Club. A $2.00 admission will offer an evening of entertainment, resources and fun with proceeds being offered back to the Community Café…our sincerest gratitude to CHANNAL with every success on an awesome show.
