Local organizations receive funds to help with housing issues
Annually the CBC Pancake Breakfast educates the public on the issue of homelessness. In addition to raising awareness, this fundraiser, hosted in various communities across Newfoundland and Labrador, raises funds for organizations and agencies that deal daily with housing and homelessness.
On February 11, 2016, the Southwestern Housing Stability Initiative successfully hosted the CBC Pancake Breakfast, after a winter storm forced them to reschedule. $455.00 was raised from donations offered, with the Stephenville Lions Club topping off the donation to $700.00. This year’s recipients of these funds were the following:
Karen’s Place: Operated under the Bay St. George Status of Women Council, this two room apartment offers a safe haven for women and children who are in need of transitional/emergency housing. Not a women’s shelter, the low rental unit offers independent living to those whose application has been selected and approved by the housing committee.
For more information on Karen’s Place, contact the BSG Women’s Center at 643-4444 or visit their facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BSG-Womens-Centre-126687414187128/timeline.
Aunt Jean’s Place: This not-for-profit organization opened its doors in 2012 offering transitional and emergency housing to individuals struggling with homelessness in the Stephenville-Bay St. George area. Guided under their Board of Directors, this four room unit located at 44 West St. offers shelter to each tenant with all amenities necessary while receiving support from the house director and the housing support worker with CEN.
Drop-in Recovery Center: New to the Stephenville area, this facility offers a safe haven for anyone challenged with addictions. Those interested in attending this great resource can drop by the Stephenville Harmon Mall, Room 2 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm. Don Russell, retired Social Worker and recovering alcoholic brings both education and experience to all who enter in.
