And So a New Adventure Begins
Several dozen people from many levels of community and government gathered today at 10 Tennessee Drive in Stephenville, as Minister Sherry Gambin-Walsh, the Minister Responsible for the NL Housing Corporation announced $164,000 in funding under the Homelessness Strategy Project. She spoke of the importance of providing safe, affordable housing to our youth, but also the importance of services to assist them in acquiring the necessary life skills and education and training to transition to the workforce. She congratulated CEN on their continued success, “it is their rich and extensive history of of facilitating and managing projects and initiatives that effect positive change for individuals and communities of our province.”
She further announced it is under the Youth Housing Initiative that the NL Housing Corporation is pleased to offer the former Youth Assessment Center to the Community Youth Network for youth housing. “Today’s event marks an important step forward for everyone involved, it demonstrates what we can achieve when we work together for safe and strong communities.”
MHA John Finn-Stephenville-Port au Port, who prior to his appointment to the House worked as the Housing Support Worker with CEN, understands all too well the need for safe and affordable housing, particularly for youth in our area. “I feel confident that this program and this house, as we move forward, will have a lasting impact on youth in the area and the province.” He recognized the supports and services CEN offers, adding that they will be beneficial to the youth who will reside in the 8 room house.
Mark Felix, during his greetings, thanked everyone who has played some part in today’s achievement. He spoke of the importance of this day in our area. “Today is a very important day in Bay St. George, we now have the facility to provide the basic needs for people, who for whatever reason, finds themselves homeless and disconnected, they will now have a place to position themselves for success and achieving their full potential.” He spoke highly of the staff of CEN and the important role each will play. “Given the dedication, enthusiasm and skills of our CEN staff I am confident this facility will become more than just four walls that will provide shelter, that the collective programs, services and supports of CEN and our many partners will significantly contribute to moving our youth along their hierarchy of needs.”
Also joining the Minister for this official announcement were Michelle Felix, Assistant to MP Gudie Hutchings, Stephenville Mayor Tom O’Brien and Mark Felix, CEN Board of Directors. Gathered for today’s event were members of the Southwestern NL Housing Stability Initiative, Community Youth Network, Community Education Network staff members.
Following greetings and comments, a tour of the building, as it stands was given. Discussions regarding how changes will be made to best fit the needs of the youth who are experiencing housing instability were heard as everyone socialized and enjoyed refreshments.
