Bookworms Summer Literacy Program: A New Adventure Everyday!
Not every day you can be a superhero, meet Ticker Tom, get finger-printed by the RCMP and ride in a fire truck…or maybe you can-especially if you happen to be part of the Bookworms Summer Literacy Program.
Seven post-secondary students along with one SWASP student, hired by Community Youth Network, led the 5 week summer program aimed for pre-K to Grade 6 students.
Operated out of three sites: Stephenville, Lourdes and Burgeo, approximately 75 young kids got to be just that-KIDS! Getting creative daily during two 2 1/2 hour sessions with activities such as coloring and crafts they put their talents to the test making paper bag Ticker Toms, popsicle superheros, painting seashells and so much more.
Hungry? If lucky and on site, there have been the chance to taste yummy pancakes and decorated cupcakes. There was fun learning about science with homemade rockets and keeping a watchful eye on the seeds you planted.
Those involved in the camp enjoyed celebrating those days we love throughout the year such as Halloween, Easter, NL Day and Canada Day. Then there were those days they got a chance to show-off their alter ego and favorite Superhero or just show up with the craziest of hairstyles.
Special guests dropped by to say hi and to teach new and fun things. RCMP students offered Child ID fingerprinting, many got to check out the fire engines and wear the cool helmets. Ticker Tom dropped by to say hi.
Of course, there was always time to slow down and read about dragons and sleepy castles; take flight in a spaceship; or be a princess in a paper bag.
At the end of 5 weeks, it is easy to say that for these kids and their coordinators, the summer was a blast! Here’s to doing it all again next year and seeing old friends! See you soon!
