Moving of the Tassel
Without Pathfinders Learning Center there would be students who’d have trouble finding their path. Second chance schools work because of supporting administration and those who have graduated before, proving it works! These were the sentiments of Perry White, Principal of the Pathfinders Learning Center in Stephenville during their annual graduation ceremony.
With school administration, building staff, friends and family gathered, three students who completed their high school requirements were celebrated for their achievements today. Addressing those gathered, Principal White spoke of life’s obstacles and our unknowing of what the future brings. How a graduation is not just a celebration of fulfilling academic requirements, but acknowledgement of accepting and overcoming obstacles and challenges along the way. Speaking to the lone graduate attending, Principal White added, “Moving of the tassel is a symbol you’ve reached those requirements. Although we don’t know where life is going, we knew when you walked through that door, there was never a doubt that you would graduate.”
He continued saying that as teachers it is their duty to prepare and ensure students reach those requirements, however, it is their goal, that each student understands what they have to offer society, that if only they could “see [yourself] through our eyes, you’d see your worth.”
Learning in a small, caring environment has many benefits and advantages including the opportunity to get to know the student on a more personal level. Sharing a story of a man who showed kindness to his sister, born with developmental and physical challenges, Principal White spoke of the importance of small acts of kindness and how each can have a lasting impact. How the simple gift of a rocking chair by one man, brought much happiness to his family. Addressing graduate, Adrianna Guinyard, he continued, “that is what you do for other people. Just like that man…your grandfather Jack Guinyard, you have a gift, the ability to come in and make other peoples’ lives better. We know that this is what you will continue to do!”
With many thanks, and tears shared; tassels moved and certificates awarded another graduation came to an end. A celebration of not just achievement, but overcoming obstacles and a sense of pride and accomplishment…Graduation! It is more than just a moving of a tassel! It’s about living!
The Community Education Network & Associates would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and wish each graduate a happy and successful future!
