International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia–What’s your True Color?
Staff from the Community Education Network & Associates supported Western Pride NL in their proclamation signing and flag raising event in their stance for equality for all. May 17th is recognized throughout the world as International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, otherwise referred to as IDAHOT.
Following the reading of the pledge and signing the proclamation, Stephenville Mayor Tom O’Brien spoke of how great it will be when the day comes that there will no longer be in need of proclamation signings to signify that everyone is not only equal, but deserves that same treatment regardless of their sexual orientation.
Following the signing, all went outside as Mayor O’Brien raised the Pride flag to fly over the Town of Stephenville as a symbol of acceptance and equality for all.
“The main purpose of the May 17 mobilizations is to raise awareness of violence, discrimination, and repression of LGBT communities worldwide, which in turn provides an opportunity to take action and engage in dialogue with the media, policymakers, public opinion, and wider civil society.” Conceived in 2004, IDAHOT was recognized in Canada and throughout the world on May 17, 2016.
