CYN helping youth “Step forward” with Career Café
Over 70 youth attended the CYN Career Café on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at the L.A. Bown Building of the College of the North Atlantic. Grades 7-12 students from the Southwestern area of Newfoundland gathered useful information and resources that can assist them in their career decision making.
Eight professionals in their field, from the Stephenville-Bay St. George area, presented on general areas and sectors of interest to the students. These industries included: education, health, industrial trades, public and non-profit sectors, and entrepreneurship. In addition, students learned how to apply and fiance post-secondary training.
During the day long event, the large group was divided into smaller groups and rotated through small, informal café style sessions in 15 minute intervals and gathered a plethora of information for future reference. At lunch they were able to gather further information from additional organizations and services such as RCMP, RNC, Armed Forces, Search & Rescue, Mental Health & Addictions, MADD and educational institutes College of the North Atlantic, Academy Canada and MUN University-Grenfell Campus.
Feedback indicated that students enjoyed and appreciated the work the volunteers put in to roll out this event and felt that the day has helped them clarify their future choices.
Following a large group activity students ended the day on a positive mental health note by agreeing to do a Random Act of Kindness and receiving Free Hugs from volunteers.
CYN was proud to be able to support these students with STEPS towards their future!
